Wenceslaus was the son of Vratislav I, the Duke of Bohemia and Drahomira, the daughter of a pagan chief. Vratislav was killed in a pagan uprising and Wenceslaus was made duke in his place. He was known as a man of utmost faith, charitable to the poor, the hungry and widows. He was killed at the door of a church by his brother Boleslaus for political reasons rising from his faith. Boleslaus believed, falsely, that Wenceslaus was conspiring against him with Saint Ludmilla his grandmother.
