Clement was a convert, brought to Christianity by Saint Peter or Saint Paul. He was named bishop of Rome in April 26, A.D. 88 making him the fourth Pope in the line of succession. He held this office for 11 yeas and 211 days, until his death  on November 23, A.D. 99. Tradition holds that he was martyred by drowning when thrown overboard from a boat with a ship’s anchor tied to him during the persecutions of Trajan. He is the author of the Epistle to the Corinthians.
